How to change Firmware on the Arduitape/TZXDuino/CASDuino.




Before you start.
Before starting you will need to download and install the Arduino IDE from https://www.arduino.cc/en/Main/Software

You will also need to install the libraries that are required. You can download them from
https://mega.nz/#!OU0QHbSB!g-LwaCPSBogsWWY-Rtq6-0W1DtJOe3wVFBZre28jIF8
To install these you will need to unRAR the file and copy the folder “Libraries” to the following location on your PC.
C:\Users\[Username]\Documents\Arduino

Now plug your device into your PC using a Mini USB cable and your PC should install the drivers automatically. If it does not then go to the following website for a good howto guide for the correct drivers.

The latest firmware files for your device can be found on the following website.

First time set up.
One you have downloaded and unpacked your firmware you should double click on the .ino file to start the Arduino IDE.

You will need to check that you have the correct board set up.
Go to Tools > Boards and select Arduino Nano.
 
Next you need to Select the correct processor.
Go to Tools > Processor and select ATMega328

Now, with your device plugged in to the PC you need to select the correct port. 
Go to Tools > Ports and select any Port other than Port 1.

If only COM1 shows then your drivers have not installed correctly.

Uploading Firmware
Before you upload the new firmware to your device you will need to check if the LCD settings are correct for your device. Not all I2C interfaces use the same address and for LCDs it’s either 0x27 or 0x3f. For those devices have been manufactured by myself you will find a label on the rear of the LCD with the address written on.

Find the line that says
LiquidCrystal_I2C lcd(0x3f,16,2); and change it to the address you require for your device.

Once that has been done you need to click on the upload button.

You should get a message “Done Uploading” and the new Firmware will be ready to go.

    Hopefully Santa's Elves will be able to help with the Dragon loading issues :)

  2. Unfortunately Andrew is working two jobs at the moment and hasn't been able to devote much time towards the project. Hopefully when things have calmed down a little we'll be able to work on the Dragon/Coco stuff.

New Firmwares With New Features

Thanks to the help of Rafael Molina Chasserot some new features have been added to the TZXDuino and CASDuino firmwares which has freed up some memory as well, which may lead to more features being added in the future.
A percentage counter and a timer counter have been added to all screens so that you know how much is left of a file to play and how long it has taken to load.
The OLED1306 and PCD8544 use completely new routines for the firmwares saving a lot of memory.
Folder navigation is now different. Rather than using the Menu button on TZXDuino or the Stop button on CASDuino to return to the ROOT directory, if you press the stop button when no file is playing you will go up one folder only making it easier to navigate.

TZXDuino
The TZXDuino has had a menu added so that MSX users can set the Baud rate of TSX files so that they can load faster than normal.
A few more emulator only IDs have been fixed so that they are skipped by TZXDuino.

This fixes issues with pause lengths that we never noticed before. It should fix games like Top Gun and Street Hawk for the Spectrum and make CDT files behave as they should for the Amstrad CPC.Changes.

Latest Firmwares

Whilst it may seem there han't been much going on in recent months we have been working behind the scenes on improving and adding more options to the various firmwares and trying to improve the hardware.

The main difference with these firmwares is that OLED 1306 screens are now fully working on all of them and that the PCD8544 has added as a screen option.
I will go into the hardware changes needed for that at a later date.
